Charles
Worth, 1912 Donated by the estate of Minnie Cassatt Ecru silk is the fabric
for this two piece wedding dress with appliquéd silk tulle overskirt, silk tulle
petticoat, lace sleeves and black, silk velvet straps with diamentè trim. The
disintegration of the silk tulle is a common problem in historic costume collections
worldwide. The Drexel collection features eight gowns by Charles Worth, considered
the father of couture. Minnie Cassatt, a member of the Drexel family, was married
to the nephew of painter Mary Casatt and active in the social worlds of Europe
and the United States in the 1900's.
